What happens outside of mesh bed leveling area?
-
I am using an automated script that performs before each print a mesh bed probing of the first layer footprint of the print. However, the nozzle also extrudes also outside of that area, for example the purge line, so I wonder what kind of mesh model RRF uses outside of the probed area?

It extrapolates and interpolates.
It might be feasible to do a few points at the outer edges of the reachable area as well as the detailed area where the print is.

What he said
My map looks like this...
Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

Interesting. Why are you doing that?
Thanks.

@fcwilt I think he's using this to optimize the density of the grid under the printed object specifically.

Doing mesh probing to make sure first layer is accurate.
-
Doing just the print area to speed up the probing.

Phaedrux, do you mean that I can add additional points selectively?
Currently I am using a regular grid that bounds the footprint of the printed object, e.g.
M557 X90:210 Y101:199 P4:3

Would be useful to show the extrapolation in DWC. IIRC, currently it shows the interpolation only. Extrapolation can have a large error if the printed object is small and far from the edge.

Do you have a problem with your bed warping/flexing/changing that requires re-creating the heightmap?
I've found that barring something unusual I can create the heightmap once and it works fine.

I am getting better results this way and it doesn't add much to the print starting time since it probes just the print area.
I added recently dual Z true leveling so maybe it's less needed now but doesn't hurt. BTW, it's not just the sagging X rods (2 x 8mm, not that stiff) may also contribute to leveling error. I think that's the weakest point in my HEVO printer, X movement is not that stiff The reset is very good.

Thanks for the info.
I had to look up what a HEVO printer was. I haven't seen a design that uses rods for X and Y like that.
Do they really sag enough to cause problems?

I can't tell for sure. They do hold but definitely not stiffed as say aluminum extrusion.
The rods based design came from Tech2C, the designer of the original Hypercube, which also tried a few different materials

My printer works well and I am happy with it but sometimes I toy with the idea of building a 'better' one and a stiffness is one of the key goals. Designed that I liked so far are the BLV mgn and the Voron Zero. Could also scrap money for a Tool Changer but this is cheating.

Have you checked out the E3D Motion System?
Looks the right printer for me. I don't need, nor want' the tool changing functionality. The design looks clean, motors and belts are within the frame as I like and I presume stiff and fast. Down side is that assembling it has less the 'home-brew' feel. I will add to my short list and look if the are available in my country. There are several resellers here , and I just looked at a few (Filastruder, Matter Hacker, Printed Solid) but failed to find it.

My finances took a big hit from the pandemic.
If things ever return to something approaching pre-pandemic conditions I plan to get one despite the price.

@zapta maybe the Jubilee printer is more up your alley.

Jubilee printer
Just took a look. Thanks. It looks as a decent design but aesthetically I prefer corexy with belts and x/y motor within the frame boundary. A less industrial look if you will.

I find it difficult to find reviews of the motion system or having it offered for sale in the US. Just the tool changer everywhere. I need only one fixed head. I have even trouble finding information and dimensions of the X/Y carriage that comes with the motion system to understand how to attach to it a direct extruder.
Anybody has good pointers with information and available in the US of the motion system alone?
