Any possibility of a Duex board using newer driver chips?
-
I just bought an e3d tool changer. I like everything about the Duet 2 wifi except for the older drivers that can't run the tool very quietly (slow speeds sound like an electronic orchestra tuning up!). Is there any chance of a Duex board with more recent driver chips that can run in stealth modes?

The expansion boards for Duet3 use newer drivers, it is not currently planned to make another Duex 5 with different stepper drivers.

To add to Tony's reply, all our more recent boards use more modern drivers. That said, the stealthChop mode of the more modern drivers is over-rated for 3D printing applications, because it doesn't work at high travel speeds, and it can't handle sudden increases in motor load caused by the nozzle encountering a blob or curl-up.

i am printing at 80mm/s with stealthchop2 without a problem on my maestro -

-
Cutover is 125.0 mm/sec
Travel move 120mm/seccutover does not work at high speeds and causes layer shifts.
that is why i suggested to modify the firmware in such a way that it switches to spreadcycle before a move that would trigger the changeover. -
Will there be a low current equivalent of the 3HC expansion to go with the mini now that it got CAN bus after all?
I suppose another reason to not make a new Duex is the limitation of having to use the same type of smart steppers on all smart drivers on the Duet2.

There's a 2-stepper expansion that goes right on the mainboard, Maestro style.

Probably not; but we plan to allow a Duet 3 Mini to be used as a CAN-connected expansion board. We might possibly do a version of Duet 3 Mini for use only as an expansion board, by not populating the USB port, network hardware or SBC port, if that reduces the manufacturing cost sufficiently to be worthwhile.
