@arnold_r_clark , I think the answer is yes and no.
First you need to know the reason why !!! if you move the quickly the motor becomes a generator , but if you more the motor nice and slowly there isn't a problem I've found .
I do it to move the nozzle out of the way or level the Z axis and that is while the motors are still energised. -
@peter247 correct, moving the axes by hand slowly does not cause any problems.

He tries his best to kill it by moving the X axis back and forth like a madman. Only reason he gets away with it I think is because the LCD backlight is taking the current to light up, but I could be wrong about that.

A little movement by hand is likely fine, especially if it has somewhere for the current to go. For what it's worth my toddler likes to play with my Ender 3, he moves the carriage and bed by hand. I try and tell him to do it slowly and if the screen lights up, slow down. So far it's been fine. And I move my corexy head around occasionally and it's not been an issue.
Best practice? No. Probably ok? Yes.
