Which board(s) for a Voron 2.4?
-
Hi *,
I'm not sure which board(s) I should source for my new Voron 2.4 build.
The voron needs 4xZ and one for X and one for Y. Plus one extruder, direct drive . I came to this setups:
Setup 1:
1x Duet 6hc
1x Toolboard 1.1 (extruder)
+ Only two boards
- No WiFi (raspberry needed)
- Lot of wires to the steppers etc neededSetup 2:
1x Mini5+ (WiFi)
1x Expansion 1XD (to get 6 stepper drivers)
1x Toolboard 1.1 (extruder)
+ Wifi
- ??Setup 3:
1x Mini5+ (Wifi)
2x Expansion 1XD one at X one at Y
1x Toolboard 1.1 (extruder)
+ Wifi
+ Nice wiring, only two pair of cables needed to the hotend and the x and y steppers
- Most expensive setup?I have one printer with a PI and a Duet 6hc, the PI does not much more than hosting the DWC to be honest. This is at the moment the most expensive WiFi adapter I have. So I think that setup 1 is out of the game here.
I search for the technical "ideal" setup, the price of the setup does not count here.
Which setup would you pick? Is there a 3rd or 4rd setup?
Cheers, Chriss

1x Mini5+ (WiFi)
1x Expansion 1XD (to get 6 stepper drivers)
1x Toolboard 1.1 (extruder)1x Mini5+ (WiFi)
1x Extension 2+ (to get 7 stepper drivers) https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Duet_3_Expansion_Mini_2plus
1x Toolboard 1.1 (extruder) optionalI think you don't need the 1XD if only one toolboard is connected. I have not yet been able to try this setup because my toolboard arrived shortly before my vacation.
I will be able to report more in 2 weeks. -

Well, the Toolboard is set. I have two of them on my IDEX and I love the concept.
The 1DX would provide the driver No. 6 for the frame movement. I see no reason to have the extension 2+ here.
The other idea is to have on 1DX directly at the stepper for X and Y two reduce the wiring.

Do you really need external drivers for X and Y? Are you planning to use special steppers there?
-
Absolutely not. I just like the idea to reduce the wiring to the minimum. I have not yet seen a voron 2.4 in real live. I may change my mind when I see that I will not find a nice spot to place them near the steppers.
So the toolboard is the only fixed point at the moment... just thinking out loud....

@chriss I think I'm missing the point here.
How would using external drivers reduce the wiring? If you are using the 1XD, you then need to run CAN wiring AND power for both the 1XD AND the external driver over to your motor.
Compared to using one of the Duet's drivers, that's quite a bit more cabling (plus the needed space at the stepper for the 1XD AND the external driver).Hm, maybe there is a misunderstanding about what the 1XD does? Just in case you don't know, the 1XD is NOT a stepper driver. It just exposes the required step/dir/etc signals for another external driver board. It's not a standalone CAN driver or something like that.

@Chriss
I am about to rebuild my 2.4, getting rid of the SKRs. (BTW You can run RRF on SKRs IIRC)I will be purchasing...
Mini 5+ - to run the 4 x Z motors (Leaves 1 spare stepper port)
2 Stepper Expansion board - to drive X and Y
1LC for the Extruder.Using the Mini 5+ is a cheaper option as as you know, minimum number of required stepper drivers is 7
(Still hate the rubberBand gantry!)Just in case you did not know... Christopher in the Duet_RRF has a AfterBurner mount for the Toolboard, which I think is in VoronUser_Mods in GitHub.

Do you plan to mount the Extention 2+ at the "z-frame"? And if so: Did you spotted a good place? End why the "Extension 2+" and not two 1DX close to the steppers?

There is no pont, maybe.
How would using external drivers reduce the wiring? If you are using the 1XD, you then need to run CAN wiring AND power for both the 1XD AND the external driver over to your motor.
The idea is to go with can and power to one stepper, than to the next and end at the extruder. That reduces the wires from the bottom up to the z-frame from 2x4 wires for the X/Ysteppers and 4 for the extruder (can plus power) to 4 wires. So from 12 to 4. That is a reduction, isn't it?
Hm, maybe there is a misunderstanding about what the 1XD does? Just in case you don't know, the 1XD is NOT a stepper driver. It just exposes the required step/dir/etc signals for another external driver board. It's not a standalone CAN driver or something like that.
Hmmm... maybe, lets replace the 1DX with a Toolboard 1.1 than. So one Toolbaord per stepper at the end.
Again: Just thinking out loud...

@chriss The 2 Stepper Expansion board - to drive X and Y, sits / plugs into the Mini 5+
https://www.duet3d.com/Duet3ExpansionMini2plusSo you only need one mount for the Mini5+ and it makes wiring simpler.
Z's are allready in the base. the 2 X/Y cables, 24V power for the 1LC, CAN for the 1LC. need to be run down the original cable chain, loads more room now!Maybe run a CAT6 for the CAN and anything else you might need later on, lights maybe.
Not sure how an inductive connects to the 1LC, I use a BLT.A 6HC is overkill for a V2.4, I wish the Mini 5+ was available when I first built my 2.4

Decision where made:
I hope that I will get the frame in the next days...
