Wantai Stepper Motors 42BYGHW811 vs. 42BYGHM810
-
I thought I had made up my mind about what steppers to buy. I wanted to go with Wantai 42BYGHM810 but now stumbled upon 42BYGHW811 and now I am not sure anymore which ones would be better.

Things I already know
As one can see the 1.8° steppers run considerably faster before torque starts to drop, so they are a clear winner there even if the 0.9° steppers already exceed my current requirements.
I know that on a Cartesian using 0.9° steppers does not really help in accuracy.
Question
- Does detent torque make any difference because this is a little lower on the 0.9° version (220 vs. 280gcm)
- Can anyone predict which of these two motors will be more quiet?
-
@wilriker Can't answer your question - DC42 is the man.
But for info, when I was looking at steppers, David pointed me to "StepperOnline". They have a huge selection, good data sheets, and a German site https://www.omc-stepperonline.com/de/nema-17-42mm-schrittmotor/
-
@deckingman Thanks, I know that site and basically all potential replacements for the extruder stepper (if the soon to be used pancake stepper is insufficient) on my list are from Stepper Online.
For now my final candidates are the two steppers listed above.

Not really, except (a) if you run them at very low currents then higher detent torque might reduce microstep accuracy; and (b) for a belt driven Z axis or a delta printer, where you may depend on the detent torque to stop the bed or effector dropping when you power the motors off.
-
I can't.
Two other comments:
- 0.9deg stepper motors are best used with 24V power so that you can get high speeds;
- Both of those motors are quite high current, although within the rating of what the Duet can drive. So you might find yourself wanting to run them at a current for which fan cooling of the Duet is needed, e.g. 2.0A.
-
@dc42 Thank you.
Re noise: I just contact Wantai directly and asked them if they have any information on noise levels.
Re current setting: I already have a cooling fan below my Duet and I plan to run these motors at 50-75% of their rated current, i.e. 1300-1800mA.

Sorry for pushing up this quite old thread, but the original one was locked and I didn't want to open a 3rd one discussing basically the same motors..
I'd be interested to hear what the general conclusion at the moment on the SteppersOnline 2004S vs the Wantai 0.9deg mentioned in this thread is..
I want to upgrade the motors on my Delta (currently 1.8 nonames) and can't decide between those two (Duet2 WiFi).

0.9 all the way on a Delta.

@Danal yeah, that much I'm certain about. I'm trying to decide between the Wantai 0.9 and the Steppers Online 0.9.
The Wantai imho has the better specs - but I've heard there may be cases where they won't play that well with the TMCs / make noise that shouldn't be there.
One of my main goals sadly has to be keeping the sound to bearable levels for day- and night time printing as it's basically standing in a one-room loft kind of appartment.
I still want to keep the best performance possible within my conditions though.

Ah... I did not read closely enough.

42BYGHW811
I use W811 on my extruder because of the 4:1 gearing I don't many steps but I need much speed. On X and Y i have M810, they are also working fine.
My printer is a CoreXY, about the noise - my printer isn't a quite machine but most of the noise comes from fans and bearings/belts working at high speeds. The motors are maybe making some noise at standstill but I don't care about that. After cooling down my printer makes ATX OFF and is 100% silent (via a really turning off the 24V power supply and having a separate 5V supply). -
Just a quick update on my side:
I've now been through 3 different brands including the famous Moons' motors and the Wantai 0.9deg mentioned above are - at least in my case - the clear winners regarding noise. They're basically silent and almost inaudible on my machine (with stepper dampers). The only strange noise that comes from them are in standstill at 1920mA, but even then they're more quiet than the other brands I've tried.The only other route left for me to investigate are uStepperS and actual DC/AC servos (I've got some spare GD Ioni drives, just need to find suitable 42mm / Nema17 sized servos to play with)
