Heater Issues
-
I've just upgraded my hot end to a volcano with a 60w 24v heater cartridge. Originally I had a v6 with a 30w 24v heater cartridge.
I can now no longer get my hot end to heat up. The led comes on to show it has been requested.
I have also tried to swap from E0 to E1 without success.
Can I control the heater using an external mosfet connected to heater 3 (pin 8 ) of the expansion connector and +5v (pin 3)? -
May be a stupid question but did you change your power supply at the same time? If you are trying to use a 24 volt heater cartridge on a 12v power supply you are going to have issues getting it to heat up.

I was 24v pre heater cartridge change

The hot end heated up once to 260 degrees and I've not been able to get it to work since. I also tried another heater cartridge and that also fails to heat up

check the fuses if they have blown.

I've checked the 7.5 amp fuse and that's ok. I even changed it as a precaution and that didn't change anything.
The little LED comes on in the corner of the board to indicate heating has been requested, it's just nothing happens.
Am I able to connect a mosfet to the expansion header? -

You shouldn't need to do that. It is possible that the Mosfet on the board has died but since you tried the other Mosfet by connecting to E1 then it is highly unlikely that both have died. It could be a bad connection in the wiring. Are you able to measure the resistance by taking the connector off the board and connecting a multimeter across the lead terminals? If my maths serves me correctly, a 24V 60Watt heater should have a resistance of about 9.6 Ohms.

You're right.
Its the heater cartridge.
Dead after first use
