All 5 Stepper Motors Grinding/Stalling



  • Hey Guys,

    I have setup my printer with new Duet Wifi board. After setting it up, the first thing I did was clicked on the default macro "Test Motor" that came with the board pre-installed. When I test, the motor starts stalling without any moment. I updated the config.h file & tried to home the axis and still had the same stalling issue.

    Please help me in this regard. I have attached the pictures & my config.h file details below. I still need to update heater section in config.h file once this issue is resolved.

    @yogibear DON'T use the test macros; they're for factory testing, and change the motor settings. Reset your Duet and follow the documentation for testing.

    Edit: longer explanation: Did you run '04-Test_motors' macro from the SD card? The macros on the SD card are for testing the Duet at the factory, not for testing your machine. It sets the motor to 2A, as well as trying to move the axes at high speed, and for 2 metres! In the test rig at the factory, it is just a motor, not connected. So please DO NOT USE the macros on the SD card for testing your machine. Follow the commissioning advice here: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Step_by_step_guide#Section_Commissioning_tests

    If you have these macros on the SD card, this also means you have an older board, as we changed the SD card contents to remove these macros quite a while ago.

  • I could think of a dozen reasons off hand but the most likely ones in no particular order are

    1. Power supply issue. After trying to move the motors send M122 and look at the minimum voltage and any under voltage events.

    2. X Y and Z won't move unless they have been homed. Use M564 H0 to alow moves prior to homing.

    3. The stepper motor wiring is incorrect. Have you identified the motor phases and connected the wire accordingly? Scroll down this link to find out how https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Choosing_and_connecting_stepper_motors

    I would check your stepper motor wiring. Did you do the connections yourself? They are tricky and either don't go all the way down, don't lock into place or the wire can have a faulty connection...ie did you clamp onto the insulation properly and not the bare wire? Also, I notice you have your wire colouring codes backards as to the duet wifi wiring diagram. It may be nothing but make sure that your 1A and 1B go to one coil on the stepper motor and 2A+2B go to the other.

    Could they be either removed before shipping (lot´s of extra work I guess nobody want´s to pay for) OR - maybe better - have the stuff updated:

    • the folder they sit in renamed to something like ("stand-alone factory test without any sensor, effector, motor etc. connected connected")
    • or
    • a default
    M291 R"FACTORY TEST!" P"ONLY USE IF NOTHING IS CONNECTED" S3
    

    or similar included in the files?

    Because I´ve seen quite a few of these posts in the forum, and it seems it is not yet clear to everybody...

    @LB the factory tests were removed from the shipping SD cards about a year ago. Not sure why some people are still receiving them; maybe still some old stock in channel with some resellers.
