I just received my DUET Wifi today. When I try to heat the bed it starts heating up, the red LED on the board turns on, the temperature increases but after ~5 degrees celcius it stops heating and says 'fault'.

I was just using my printer earlier today without any issue on the old board running Marlin.

The bed is an ultrabase 220x220x5.5 on 12V.

Suitable ferrule connectors for the heated bed were not supplied so I had to resort to wiring it directly in (and just being very very cautious until new ones arrived). Don't know if it matters but mentioning just in case.

The extruder heats up just fine.

You need to run heater tuning on both heaters. See https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Tuning_the_heater_temperature_control.
