Retraction settings changed mid-print?

My retraction settings are increasing by 700% mid-print.
My Cura settings have my retraction at 5mm, as per the manufacturer's suggestions for my extruder.
However, around halfway through the print, my printer started retracting 35.0mm. What in the world?? It is causing some popping and gaps, why is this happening?

Edit: it's getting even worse now! The retraction distance has increased by 800% to 40mm! Why is it doing this? At this rate I won't even be able to finish the print.

The answer: I had created a retraction tower earlier. The "alter Gcode" plugin was still active even though it was not visible, and was increasing my retraction distance every 20 layers.
