Duet boards and laser engraving speeds.



  • Hi all, from my searching I see that some have successfully setup laser engraving with Duets, though my impression is that it is still very much a pioneering effort at this point sorting out the wiring and software work flow.

    I have custom setup. That is currently using grbl-lpc and I seem to be limited by the processing power either from the gcode/sec or the motion planner. It is a machine that is setup to etch like a lathe so we can achieve very high speeds, but the controller seems to be the bottle neck.

    I am wondering if anyone has done a comparison between duet and grbl-lpc if there is any potential speed improvements to be had.

    I assume that regarding processing power there would be difference between maestro, duet2 and duet3 in this application.

    hardware is pretty much worked out, but some user do seem to find it difficult to identify their laser driver and choose the correct method for wiring it to the duet. can't comment on the software, but i believe dc42 has worked with the lightburn ppl to make it work

    not specifically with respect to engraving afaik, but i think you'll find general comparisons if you ask google (although duet = hardware, grbl-lpc = firmware so use the correct search terms for best results)

  • Thank you. Yeah I was hoping for some real world experience or examples. As I understand the firmware has a large impact on the overall performance of engraving speeds given that GRBL-LPC is quite a bit faster than standard smoothie running on the same hardware. I am unsure how reprap stacks up and if the faster hardware of the duet 3D would be utilized. I believe my current bottleneck is in the way the hardware and firmware handle motion planning as I am trying to lay down as many dots as fast as possible on a helical path on cylindrical surface.
