Is it possible/good idea to just use a 5V usb supply to power up the duet if we are using two external motor drivers and maybe switching a two relays?

Besides https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/USB_ground_loops there is nothing that can go wrong afaik, i suppose external drivers need a common ground to the duet?

Having said that if it will work or not is subject to weather or not the firmware is only restricting motion on internal drivers when vin is below 10v or thereabouts. For sure if you have internal drivers configured the firmware does not allow motion when vin is missing (or below the threshold).

Are your external drivers perhaps powered outside of the Vin range for the Duet or?
