I am a big fan of the DUET platform, and I even met one of the bigwigs (Tony) at ERRF in 2019. During the pandemic, I took a break from hobbies and had another child. Now, I’m back into the swing of things and have been researching building a CNC using either Pokeyes, AXBB-E, or some of the 5 or 6 options from Acorn, Masso, etc. But then, thanks to the magic of the YouTube algorithm, I saw Tom or Tim Stanton making a legit CNC machine with aluminum extrusions and linear rails, similar to a heavy-duty DUET 3D printer I built in 2018! You can find his channel on Tim Stanton (its Tom Stantons second channel)
Can someone sponsor him to go into more detail on his DUET setup? I’d be willing to buy a DUET 3 as a starter board/build before moving to something like a MASSO or AXBB-E later.
Now, I am EXTREMELY interested in running a Duet as a CNC router. At the time, the general consensus was that DUET wasn’t really ready for CNC or plasma without some heavy modifications or being okay with missing features and partial functionality. The Duet 3 barely existed back then. Can we finally port the platform into a CNC router? What are the main trade-offs of using a DUET 3 as a capable mini aluminum sheet router in 2025?
Still love your platform, BTW! Thank you!
Also, I am interested in a small DIY plasma table as well. I know when I spoke to Tony, he mentioned that they had a lot of plans and ideas but not enough bandwidth, which I understood. That was 6-7 years ago, so I’m sure some things have changed. The DUET 3 running at 48 volts with 5-6 amp steppers is a big deal to me. One last thing, I did note in Tom's video some prominent CNC builder/instruction youtuber were leaving comments, getting more people to do CNC builds with DUET cannot be a bad thing. It has eyes on it.
Thank you for reading.
