Using rotary encoder for filament monitoring
-
I have a rotary encoder that I want to use as a filament monitor for clog detection. I have been using the laser filament monitor and it has worked well so far but I have heard of problems depending on the type/color of filament used. Has anyone tried using a rotary encoder for this? Any advice on how I could go about wiring and configuring a rotary encoder for filament monitoring?

Hi @FairladyZ
I haven't seen anyone use one on here. They are meant to be releasing the magnetic sensor option shortly. I was hoping we were going to hear something about it last week but nothing as of yet.
Kind Regards,

SamWe finally have production housings for the magnetic filament monitors. We are running tests to check that they work OK with current firmware, also I am holding back releasing RRF 2.04 in case changes are needed.

@dc42 great news. I have been holding off getting a filament monitor or making one for these. Hopefully they are not too far away

@dc42 sorry to be a pain but is there any news on the magnetic filament sensor. I am doing a bit of a rebuild and would like to integrate it in. Apparently filastruder are selling a Duet one but I am not sure if it is the latest release.
Kind Regards,
Sam

99p filament monitor
99p filament monitor againIt's still in use on my cartesian (diy i3 clone) and working well, although I had to set the parameters looser than I expected due to the error that accumulates with retraction and not actually knowing which way the encoder is moving when a transition comes through. I think to make this work well one would need to develop a model of the encoder in the duet firmware and predict the transitions based on the instructed filament movement.
