Something like repetier and FTS with an encoder before or after the (direct or bowden) extruder will be a nice addon.
It could be also use as a bowden live compensation as it is described by Daniel in this thread : https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/3dp-ideas/oPjgUamO8kk

We're developing a filament out detector, using a Hall sensor to detect filament motion.

And what are you planning for it ? A pause like an endstop when filament is over or more functionality ? Jamming detector with a time delta before reducing speed?
Is it sync to the duetwifi ?
Damned! We are testing with an arduino and I will love to push more functionality !

The awesome bit about using a Duet is the macros on triggers allow you to customise the action taken. Currently triggers only work with a digital transition (so you can pause a print, sound an alarm, etc when the filament jams) however for this it would be great to have some triggers related to %difference in rate demanded vs delivered.
