    • Duet 3 Mini 5+ : Initial announcement

We are excited to officially announce a new Duet Mainboard:

The Duet 3 Mini 5+ is an evolution of the Duet 2 Maestro, It provides 5 on board drivers and the normal compliment of heaters, fans, IO, LCD etc. There are a Wifi and Ethernet variants with the option of using an SBC for control in the same manner as other Duet 3 mainboard. Expansion is more limited, it does not support the CAN-FD bus (EDIT: it does now) but does have a header for a three driver expansion board (EDIT: now a two driver expansion board).

      Ethernet version shown

We will have more news shortly, including RRP and a call for participants to take part in limited initial prototype testing.

    • Announcement: Duet 3 Toolboard revision v1.1

We have just started supplying out resellers with the new version of the Duet 3 toolboard: v1.1

      Key Changes:

      • Added a LIS3DH accelerometer.
      • Changed all headers other than VIN, OUT0 and CAN to JST PH right angle connectors. (Thanks @KarlMarklund who did this as mod to an older version)
      • Added a footprint for a Omron D2FD-1L30-1T or similar switch (may be useful for tool dock confirmation).
      • Added a solder jumper that brings a 120R CANFD bus terminating resistor into the bus circuit to allow a toolboard to be directly connected to a Duet 3 mainboard without a tool distribution board. Thanks to @Nuramori and @bearer for this suggestion
      • Board dimensions changed slightly (mounting holes unchanged)
      • Added a jumper to switch VOUT on OUT1 and OUT2 between 12V and VIN. Thanks @TLAS for this suggestion.

    • Managing Spam accounts

For info, due to an increased number of spammers we have had to introduce the following changes:

      1. No profile website, background image, description can be set for new users until they have a reputation of 3 or more.
      2. Unverified users (users who have not verified their email address) have limited posting ability - just new topics.
      3. Some users will have to have manual approval before they can register.
      4. Our T&Cs for using the forum will be updated to make it explicit what is acceptable or unacceptable as far as linking out to external websites from your profile.

I realise that for some users who do not have an email address set, or verified, these new restrictions may be annoying. We are not doing this because we want to harvest your email and start spamming you! Quite the opposite it is to reduce the admin overhead of keeping the forums as spam free as possible.

The email address you register on the forums for is there to allow verification, and then following that for notifications (e.g. someone replied to your post or tagged you). All notifications emails can be configured in your profile and you do not need to receive any of you do not want to.

For information we do use other strategies to reduce forum spam. None are 100% effective, hence the layered approach.

Please also keep flagging spam posts or profiles when you see them in case they are missed by an administrator.

      Forum rules

These are the Forum Rules you agree to when you sign up:

      • Be respectful: everyone is here to learn, help and contribute.
      • No personal attacks: discuss an issue rather than attacking the person.
      • No spamming: this will get you banned immediately. See the SPAM section below.
      • You must verify your email address in order to get access to full posting/reply/uploading images functionality.

      Changes/Additions to Rules:

      • We reserve the right to expand on or change the rules as we grow.

      Breaking the rules

      • Generally we will warn you before banning you.
      • Repeated offences will lead to banning.
      • Breaking SPAM rules will lead to immediate deletion of your profile and SPAM content.

      SPAM

Spam is unacceptable on this forum, if you are not sure what you are about to post is SPAM then ask one of the moderators or administrators. Spamming includes SPAM in your user profile and chat messages. Some non exhaustive examples of what we consider SPAM:

      • Off-topic posts with links to external websites. We have an "off topic" category and discussing off topic matters there is fine, just don't use that as an excuse to link out to stuff in order to drive traffic there.
      • Links in user profiles to commercial websites. The exception to that is Duet resellers and OEMs. Hobby or personal websites are normally ok for active users. If you register, do not engage on the forum and have a link in your profile you will potentially fall foul of the SPAM filters.
      • Descriptions in profiles that are spam or SEO related
      • Posts or links to products/service websites, that while may be 3d printing/cnc etc related (and so not necessarily off topic) are clearly there to drive traffic to that website and not for discussion. The exceptions to this are Duet3D resellers or OEMs. If in doubt, ask.

Please flag spam posts or profiles when you see them in case they are missed by an administrator.

    • Remembering Sanjay Mortimer: 1989 - 2021

e3d have just shared some devastating news:

It is with the heaviest of hearts that E3D are announcing the death of one of our founding directors, Sanjay Mortimer. He passed away on Saturday 27th November.

Sanjay was a legend in our industry and played a huge role in revolutionising FDM 3D printing. As a founding member of E3D, he was instrumental to all our early developments. As we grew to where we are today, he continued to play an important role in our engineering team.

Over the last 10 years he has supported the creation of a world-leading extrusion-system engineering team in preparation for E3D’s second decade. Sanjay’s team will deliver on our vision of changing the way humanity manufactures goods.

We will reflect on how we can celebrate a remarkable man. Dave and Josh believe that the spirit of this should be maintained with an endowment in Sanjay’s name to assist young engineers in achieving their goals

I am personally shocked and saddened to hear of Sanjay's death. He was a friend to us here at Duet3D, a remarkable engineer and he made a large and lasting difference to both the technology of 3d printing and our community.

My sincerest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, he will be sorely missed.

    • RE: DuetWifi clones in the wild

There are a number of variations on the clone (not going to validate or help by linking). The variation that has that notice on the PCB is complying with one of the terms of our open source license agreement:
      https://github.com/T3P3/Duet/blob/master/LICENSE

      Specifically:

      ..
      a. Attribution:
Any reproductions or modifications of the DuetWifi hardware must contain the following attribution on the silkscreen or packaging:
"Based on the DuetWifi by Think3dPrint3d and Esher3d, see www.duet3d.com for the original DuetWifi information. This reproduction/modification is not endorsed or supported in any way by Think3dPrint3d or Escher3d".
      ..

The other clones do not comply with this term as they do not have the disclaimer. I have not personally checked any of the clones for correct component sourcing, assembly, PCB specification etc, buyer beware.

On the wider point about cloning this is a complex discussion. My start point is that @AdrianBowyer opensourced the RepRap: if he had not done that I think the 3d printing/additive manufacturing landscape would be totally different now. Arguably many of the companies and individuals who participate in using and improving 3dprinting would not be involved. RepRap was a paradigm shift that lowered the barrier to entry for everybody, and everyone involved benefited, and continue to benefit from that. The benefit that everyone (including us) gets from being part of, contributing to, an opensource ecosystem is huge. That said the development of the Duet can only continue at the level and form that it does with an element of commercial viability.

So what to do to continue to enable Duet and RRF development?

      • Encourage people to buy a board from us or our official resellers.
      • Report cloners to AliExpress or other retailers if the clones do not adhere to the terms of the license agreement.
      • Continue to support this community by helping out on the forum, with beta testing, by contributing to firmware development or documentation as you can.
      • Continue to blog, vlog, tweet, post, Instagram, etc about the awesome printers, CNC machines etc you are building with Duet.

    • Guide for posting requests for help

Please help everyone to help you by including the following information in a post for assistance with Firmware, Hardware etc on the forum.

      • Please be civil, we are trying to help!
      • Mention which versions of RepRapFirmware, Webserver (if applicable) and Duet Web Control you are using.
      • Mention which hardware you are using (Duet 2 Wifi, Ethernet, Smart Effector, Duex5 etc) and what architecture your printer has (Cartesian, CoreXY, Delta etc.). Also if it is an issue with a specific piece of hardware post in the relevant forum.
      • Provide links to your config.g (and other .g files like homeing, bed etc, if they are relavent to the issue). These files are best attached to the forum post using the "upload file" button: 0_1530638898995_de839f51-5ccf-4ff3-9264-6027929718f0-image.png
      • If it is a question about specific hardware other than Duet 3d (e.g. a specific stepper motor) provide a link to the datasheet.
      • If it is an issue since you updated the firmware, please make sure you have read the "whats new" update for all the releases in between your old and new firmware versions.
      • Please have a search for other threads where people have had the same/similar issues. Do note however that RepRapFirmware gets updated frequently so if its an old thread treat with caution.
      • If possible describe exactly how to recreate the problem.
      • some times uploading a screen shot of the issue or a picture of how things are connected helps if that applies to your issue.
      • If you are getting an error message, include the exact error message in your post.
      • Keep your issue contained to a single thread, that way all your information is in one place and it's easier to track.
      • When that issue is resolved, if you have another unrelated issue, start a new thread for it.
      • When your issue gets resolved mark it solved for others to find in the future.

    • Duet 3 6HC v1.02 - Wifi Module

We added an ESP header to the Duet 3 6HC v1.02 and have designed an ESP32 wifi module to plug into that.

      The initial documentation is here:

      https://docs.duet3d.com/en/Duet3D_hardware/Duet_3_family/Duet_3_Mainboard_6HC_Hardware_Overview#wifi-v102

We have a small number of prototypes for testing for people who already have a 6HC v1.02 up and running on their machine and are running 3.5 firmware. If that sounds like you please drop me an email, info@duet3d.com with details of your printer, your forum name and where you are located.
