    Different voltage for mainboard & expansion boards

      Presently I have the Duet 3 mainboard in combination with three 3HC expansion boards powering 8 steppers for movement and several more as extruder.
      The voltage rating of the boards is given as 12-32V.

      Would it be possible to run the mainboard on 12 volts and the three expansion boards on 24 Volts? This would be severely reducing the amperage through the cabling for the expansion boards.

      My present, not yet powered system, uses 2.5mm2 (14 awg). One cable to power the mainboard, one cable to power the three expansion boards.

      I’m trying to prep my printer for future modifications within the possibilities of the Duet 3. Using the two voltage ratings would also spread the required load over the two power supplies used.image.jpg

        you can, but you can also use multiple 24v supplies (but if you don't "need" 24v for the main board go for it)

          Yes you can do that. But why don't you want to run the main board at 24V too?

            Well Originally I intended to use a 12V system as main voltage and 24V only for the heated bed and for 1 or two hot ends. Other hotends would be running on 12V only. For this purpose I installed the two powersupplies and three mosfets.

            Switching over to the Duet three, I started to worry about the thickness of the cables and amperage required, especially with the large number of steppers.

            Could not find maximum power requirements for the boards hence I decided to spread the loads over the two powersupplies, more as a guess then data.

            The main board on 12 V
            The main board hot bed connection to the 24V
            The three expansion boards on 24 Volt

            Spreading the load and lowering the individual powers, also lowers the risk of over heating, putting it all on 24V could potentially jeopardize that.

              I meant putting it all on the Single 24V Power supply will jeopardize that
