New owner here, replacing a perfectly good functioning Rambo board on a Makergear M2 with Duet 2 Ethernet just to cause myself lots of pain and suffering.. Questions is, board came with 3.1.1, is there a compelling reason to update the firmware to 3.2 or 3.3?
This is a plain Jane workhorse printer with no bells or whistles and I just want it to work as well as it does now with the stock Marlin and old 8bit chipset. Would be nice if it works better, but I do not want to spend extra hours working with unstable bleeding edge firmware. I have enough to learn as it is and just want rock solid stable like it is now. Quieter without dampers would be nice, and more accurate holes would be even better, so those are my current hopes and dreams 🙂

      Thanks in advance!

Since it is already at 3.1.1 updating to 3.3 should be a breeze.

3.4 is still in beta and lots of folks seem to be trying it out but I let others do that.

I'm happy with 3.3 for now.

@fcwilt Thanks Fredrick! So 3.3 is as stable as 3.1.1. and where I should start my journey from?

If you still have access to DWC. Upload this zip file in the system tab. Don't extract it first. Reboot after. Use M115 in the gcode console to verify the firmware has been applied.

            https://github.com/Duet3D/RepRapFirmware/releases/download/3.3/Duet2and3Firmware-3.3.zip

That will get your firmware and DWC up to date.

You can see the change logs here:

These documents will come in handy during the conversion.

The basic configuration for getting to the point that the network is up and running is pretty much the same for all WiFi setups and all Ethernet setups.

I have a bare bones config file on my computer for each case. I copy the file to the SD card of any new board, power up the board on the workbench, verify basic functionality (can I get to the DWC, etc) and then update the firmware.

Once I am satisfied the board is in working order only then do I install it on whatever printer I am working on.

Yup, usb cable, network cable, added IP to config.g that came on the board, cycled power and network remained as it is a static IP . Need to read about the config tool and get that going as well. Since my printer is fully functional I don't want to be off-line too long so doing as much per-work before the swap. Will look into backing up the sd card before update just because I am a Unix Admin and backout is always a requirement, updating firmware and how the config tool works after I get the cover for the board case designed and printing..

I enable FTP in the Duet firmware and just download whatever files I want to backup.

You can of course upload new files as well.
