I need to use NEMA 23 or 24 for my application, is it possible to use more industrial motor controllers, e.g. 8A?

As I understand it, in a simple RAMPS 1.4 could replace the drivers and connect in the high wiring of the high power controllers.

      Thanks

Yes, see the wiki page on connecting external stepper drivers. You will probably need the expansion breakout board.

The Duet can drive some Nema 23 motors directly. Choose ones rated at 2.8A.
