E1 and E0 lock up stepper

  • Bit of an odd one I'm having trouble with.

I run a single extruder, generally E0. I swapped in a new extruder stepper and now when I send any extrusion signal the stepper just locks up until I power off the machine. I have tried the following:

    • Changed to E1 to see if maybe it was the driver that's bad, but E1 has the same issue.
    • Tried other known-good steppers in it's place, same result.
    • Ran M584 X0:3:4 to mirror the X axis, when I move X the extruder stepper turns just fine and seems to mimic X perfectly.

Nothing has changed in config.g prior to me swaping E0 and E1 (back to E0 now)

What would cause the stepper to lock up an force a power cycle yet M584 X0:3:4 works?

    Thank you for the help!

  • did you change the wiring to match the new stepper?

Is the hot end at operating temperature? If you try to extrude with the hot end cold, then the motor will be energised but extrusion will be prevented, and you should get a "Tool N was not driven because its temperature is too low" message. You can use M302 to enable cold extrusion while you are running tests.
