You obviously look at "inital config" as making the set of files in sys directory, I on the other hand look at "initial config" as bringing printer to the state I do not care to look at it any more
Actually I believe we are saying the same thing. I very rarely look at the panel (or web) of a printer when it is "just printing". Maybe occasionally to see an estimated end time. That's about it.
my interaction with a printer is telegram notification print is done so I go take the print out of the printer, or telegram notification from TSD that some #%$^# happened and I need to remove the garbage from the printer
How do you load a different filament? Do you ever have to jog the carriage to remove that garbage? Or heat (or cool) a hot end to replace a nozzle? Or wish to home and move around some after replacing a broken belt?

thanks for the link my duckduckgo-fu is baaaaaaaaaaaad these days ... looks like gray hair is not the only thing that gone crazy

How do you load a different filament?
the "toner change" operation
"open" the extruder, shove the filament in, "close" the extruder, before the first print I just let it extrude 50mm and that's it .. these flex3drive extruders (the old ones, I have not tried G5 yet) are pretty sturdy and reliable I don't worry about them much ... also printbite is so reliable I don't even need to watch the first layer as I had to while backthe 2.6-5kg spools last a while so not something I do often and most are single extruder..
Do you ever have to jog the carriage to remove that garbage?
nope, printer off, I move stuff around with hand... I jog a lot during initial setup, I can't remember last time I jogged a printer that's bin setup and operational. I jog my cnc machine "a lot" so there I find my linuxcnc touch screen super useful
Or heat (or cool) a hot end to replace a nozzle?
nope, I service nozzles in a whole different house to where printers are where I have all the electronics gear setup (and heaters, psu's etc..)
Or wish to home and move around some after replacing a broken belt?
to replace broken belt you turn the machine off and you can move stuff around
after you replace broken belt machine need to be setup from scratch (don't really but I normally when that happens replace all belts, idlers, check all connectors, cables, replace heaters... basically service the whole machine so the whole machine needs to be squared and leveled from scratch) so for that initial setup some type of terminal/screen/jog is super useful .. usually a laptop with connection to octoprint is what I use but we'll see how it will be with the duet .. looks more promising than smoothieware+octoprint for nowanyhow, off to read that msn docs to see what's this all about ... I just hope it's not as bad as ....

also I don't see simplify3d losing sales
Do they publish sales numbers? Or can we assume the level of innovation they're doing is proportional to sales? All I know is their DRM caused one techie to target their sales by releasing the the crack he wrote to allow himself to use the software according to the license terms; and innovation seemingly stagnated.

as I said prusa is supporting them
Prusa tends to make things open source, why not have a look at their code?
In any case I think Danal said it all

@bearer, I assume their sales is going good since they are not doing anything to improve the product (quite contrary, they are happy to censure forum behave rather "looking us from the high position") ... I guess if they had issues they would change ..
was planning to look at prusa source as last resort as I was trying to find a documentation from m$ or chewed up version of the whole thing as a blog post / forum post by someone and since now I have documentation from m$ I'm learning directly from the horses mouth .. does not look totally useless (looks like m$ is even providing their own slicer) but also does not look like it's worth an effort

finished reading, not 100% useless but as already said by @Danal it's revolving around USB and for me personally that's a total nogo as I do not wanna have any printer tethered to win10
