Using trigger files to toggle fan / lights on and off?

Hello.
Anyone know if it exist a way to write a trigger file so it will change the status of a fan output to on if off and off if on?
I have connected some led lights to a fan a fan output and would like to connect a switch that toggle them on and off.
Or is it posible to have the trigger command testing if a pin is active and that way have one file for on an other for off?
