Is it possible to use closed loop steppers with the duet 3, and if so how do i use them?

Not directly, as in "closed loop back to the Duet board". The firmware will not, at present, configure the Trinamic drive chips to do this.

This question comes up periodically: Should a given 3D printer be open or closed loop?

There is no technical 'right' or 'wrong' answer. It is ultimately a design choice or philosophy. It is certainly true that closed loop can detect, and sometimes correct, issues that open cannot. It is also certainly true that 99% of 3D print at the hobbyist level is open, and is incredibly successful with that choice.
