I have a Duet board on my 3d printer and love it, looked over at my laser and was curious if I could install a Duet board on it, and also have some kind of auto focus sensor on the head that can run the Z table up and down based on the material it is cutting.

      Similar to this:

      Would something like this work?

      Thank you.

        See https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Gcode?revisionid=HEAD#Section_M594_Enter_Leave_Height_Following_mode.

The IR sensor doesn't have a true analog output, although it could do with modified firmware and a smoothing capacitor on the output.
