I'm setting up my heated chamber with the heater controlled by a solid state relay. Question: can I run it directly from one of the pins on the expansion connector or do I need a mosfet to drive the SSR? Wouldn't want to overcurrent and burn out the pins.

You can connect the SSR control terminals between the expansion connector pin and +3.3V.
