How to untangle mix of RRF 3.2.x and 3.3 beta

I have managed to create a mess by installing 3.3, then 3.2.2 then back to 3.3, ... Is there a systematic way to clean out my installation? What's the best information I can look for to sort things out?

Also, @dc42 is there a software tool I can use to inspect attributes of the binary files on my Windows machine? If I could see what versions they are, I might see my problem
