Samsung S4 as a Webcam
-
I had an old one lying around with phone issues, but still fine on wifi.
I tested webcam app : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pas.webcam&hl=en and assigned a fixed ip address to the S4.
The app will tell you how to connect (what to enter in the Duet Web app)For those who don't know the howto in Android :
- Connect to the wifi network you want to connect to
- go into wifi settings and do a long press on the wifi the phone is connected with
- choose second option : "modify network"
- select show advanced options
- change IP-settings from 'DHCP' to 'Static'
- enter IP address and gateway;
This is a first setup for a mount on a 2020-beam : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2533621

Very interesting going to try this with an old Google Nexus Phone (Samsung) that has a cracked screen and see if I can get that to go.

a cracked screen
You'll just need the screen to set up the App.
I did some testing yesterday. Phone works just fine as a webcam.
Just pay attention for overtemperature.
Apparently this creates a high load on the processor. I removed the backpanel, selected the option in the APP to continue in the background and switched off the screen.
It is a big difference!App has an option to switch on the flash light from within the web app. One could even check the printing process in the dark!
Edit : had the S4 on now for a while as I intend to use it. Temp remains around 35°C. Seems ok without back and screen switched off.

Hark,
Is that another market for old phones I hear? Seems to me an old smart phone is a way better cam than 90% of the cheap web cams on the market. And there are millions of them out there sitting in drawers. I have an old 10 inch tablet I would like to use as a cam and control pendant, but I'm afraid it may be a little TOO old. Even my Google Nexus 7 is only really useful as an alarm clock these days.
Anybody actually know if Android or IOS is the better choice for this type of thing?

That made me chuckle. I'm less than one year away from getting the state pension by the way so have a bit of a different outlook on life.
Anyway , the Nexus 7 came out when - 2012 or thereabouts? That makes it 5 years old. I got married in 1975 (42 years ago) and our original LED alarm clock (which was cutting edge stuff in those days - didn't have to wind it up and all that) is still going strong. No offence meant or intended but from an old guys perspective, it just seems that everything new today will be obsolete or broken tomorrow. The trouble is, the rate of change of technology seems to be inversely proportional to my ageing ability to keep up to date.

Nexus 7 out in 2012 and abandoned by Google/Android within 2 years I think. No more software updates ever.

Yep sad really I have 2 of them but neither have a rear camera on them and batteries are getting tired in them now

That was the first "smart" device I ever bought. Only had "dumb" phones prior to that. The experience put me right off buying a smart 'phone and it was only last year that I actually bought a smart 'phone. Still not sure why I bothered - don't get me wrong, it does a lot more. I can check emails, use all sorts of apps to do all sorts of things but I'd be so much happier if I could actually make and receive calls on the bloody thing (the signal where I live is crap)

Join the club Ian and I work for the Maintenance company that looks after all the networks

Seems that I'm in the same club. When I extract the number from Dougal1957, the difference is very small
But from the webcam point of view, seen through an 'old' device, I like thinking about reusing old abandoned devices.
Quality is very good. It's only a bit unusual one has to boot a webcam …
