6HC Power Supply and Max Power Using One Power Supply
-
What is the maximum power the Duet 3 6HC can handle? 360W?
I want to run 6, 24V, 4.2A stepper motors at once and want to know if this is possible using one power supply connected to the board or if I have to use expansion boards with dedicated power supplies.

@crockett I would say absolutely not a problem, however software bugs have kept me from running all steppers at the same time so I can't fully confirm. I would be interested if anyone thinks otherwise.
I am running 12 of 24V and 5A steppers from a single power supply chained through the 6HC to 2 of 3HCs.

@theolodian Thanks for the replay. I feel I am misunderstanding something because that is 1440W. The board has a 15A breaker and with a 24V input, that is 360W before the breaker should blow.

@crockett The expansion boards aren't behind the 6HC fuse, I have them on the same terminals as the Vin.
I don't expect to run all 12 axes at once, and you can turn down the current with M906. I am running a 1KW supply so my target it 3.5A per motor however there is some flexibility there. The 10A fuse on the 3HC would be happy with that, however yes the 15A fuse on the 6HC would not.
Another option is the 1XD and an external driver.

Thanks again!
To clarify, you have your 1KW supply outputting to both of your 3HC boards and you 6HC board in parallel to divide the current and you have your current limited by running M906?
This question will show my inexperience, however it needs to be asked. If you hook up a 1KW power supply to the 6HC only, will it instantly blow the onboard breaker or will I have to pull current through it with a load to cause it to blow.

Yes. They are daisy-chained via the screw terminals. Also, power supply has many output terminals so can wire each directly. Yes, limit power with M906 in config.g. You often find that you don't need or want full current on large motors. Also pay attention to idle current. Should be low unless holding a load.

No, not a problem. Have to pull the power to blow the fuse. That takes some doing.
