Anyone used linear actuator(s) with the E0 / E1 steppers?

To me it sounds simple enough but then I know just enough and not enough to be extremely dangerous.
The idea would be to command the linear actuators to activate then stop at desired distance before the 3d printer begins to print. At a set time after the print completes or upon user command, the actuators retract to home state.
Can this be done with the current DuetEthernet?
