Communication between Duet and PanelDue

Hi,

how the communication between electronics and PanelDue works?

I know, that it's serial communication, but is it only gcode messages, or some custom format?
Is there any documentation?

Yes, it is an UART connection thats sends G-Code's back and forth.
PanelDue mostly sends M408 once a second to receive a json-based status response.
