so yesterday i unplugged the z probe from the board while it was powered on and then the board wouldn't operate as normal so i powered off the machine and took the sd card out and put it in my pc to back it up but the sd card is not recognised in any device i have tried it in, so not much of a problem i have spares and i back up every week anyway but the board appears to have the firmware erased so i connected to the pc and opened device manager and sure enough it says bossa program port. now when i open the sam ba software and choose the port and board type and press connect it says could not connect and in the top of the box it says invalid chip id. I also tried bossa ad that just shuts down when i choose the port number. my question is have i broken it

It sounds very much like you are using either a wrong or outdated bossa build. Try SAM-BA 2.17 instead: https://www.microchip.com/DevelopmentTools/ProductDetails/Atmel SAM-BA In-system Programmer

Did you try updating the driver as well?

Well, sometimes USB3 ports don't work and can cause various problems. Try flashing it over a USB2 port if possible. If that fails, I suggest you try the same procedure again on another PC and/or attempt to boot from a Linux live CD like Ubuntu. See https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/try-ubuntu-before-you-install#0

What type of Z probe is it, and how did you have it connected to the Duet?

It sounds to me that there has been a transient on the +3.3V rail which has damaged the processor (but not wrecked it completely) and the SD card. I guess that transient was caused when the Smart Effector was unplugged.

We may have some refurbished v1.01 boards available. If you are interested in buying one at a special price to replace your board, then please email info at duet3d dot com.
