It seems the ESP8266 / ESP-12s doesn't work with certain routers, including my brand new one (which uses Qualcomm IPQ4028 https://www.qualcomm.com/products/ipq4028 )

• Can the ESP-8266 firmware be updated?
• Does it currently require WPA2 TKIP?
• Is there a list of incompatible chipsets?
