      Hi,

A while back I decided to pursue my interest in 3D printers. I was curious what $300 or so would get in the way of a Chinese import.

So I picked three different vendors with good ratings and ordered three mini-deltas.

After becoming familiar with what the "out of box" printer could do I began to explore upgrades.

A friend put me on to the Duet line and I liked so many things about the products I upgraded the three printers to Duet WIFI boards.

Here is what the base contains - I allowed room for the Duet expansion board.

I'm having a grand time messing around with these little printers.

Three! That's just being greedy πŸ™‚

Seriously though, keep us informed of progress. I've often that buying a cheap kit and then modifying/improving it might actually be a cost effective way of getting something that works well.

I started with the assumption that 3D printers in general would, from time to time, need adjustment or repairs. By starting with a kit I figured that I would learn along the way what I needed to know to keep them running.

Currently I am trying to mount a Diamond three color hotend to one of the printers. If that works well then I plan to try the five color variation.

While over time I may end up with machines that cost me what a "ready to run" machine would have cost, I will know mine inside and out.

Frederick. If you haven't already seen my blog, there is quite a lot of stuff on using a Diamond hot end that you might find helpful. Specifically this https://somei3deas.wordpress.com/2017/01/11/using-the-diamond-hotend-with-duetwifi/ and you can always PM me if you get stuck

You could always ask the current one which she prefers:

                1. You playing 3d printers and she knows where you are

                2. Out looking for an upgrade to wife #1

                Its all about training πŸ˜‰

Tried number 2 - now have large rolling pin shaped bruise on my head. Should have known better - after 42 years, she has me well trained.

3 is a good number, you'll always have one working no matter what, I have 3 if I want more they'll have to be kept at work for similar reasons.

                      I appreciate all the replies.

And a "thank you" for the reference to using the Diamond.

Having developed a decent understanding of these deltas, based on the recommendation of a friend, I have a Folger Tech FT-5 on order, to see what that type of printer has to offer.

… and a strange idea of moving a bed on the X & Y axis with the nozzle only moving on the Z axis, dunno if it will work but its worth a shot to see if it can be done

I think any arrangement is possible but what are the pros and cons.

One of the cons of moving the bed in X and Y is the overall printer size will be around twice the size of the bed in each axis.

Still nothing wrong with experimenting - it can be very enjoyable.

                            ]

I just obtained an FT-5 recently, waiting on a maker713 kit for it before I even touch it

I went to the maker713 site but could not find detailed information on what they are offering.

                            Do you have a link?

                            Thanks.

Can be done but it takes up a lot of room. Also, I doubt if you'd be able to do this without the part falling off the bed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG1WqijJ634

The website is a bit strange http://713maker.com/ft5.html obviously not done by an IT guy, if you keep scrolling down that particular page then there is more pictures and info on the parts, prices and how to order, dont expect a kit to be available anytime soon though.

I missed it the first time too

I see what you mean. First they ask you what parts you are interested in THEN they have the info on the parts.

                                Thanks.

Once they get the CNC mill installed things should speed up considerably IF it is anything like the mills I am familiar with.
