I design and fabricate custom components for marine applications. I am currently running 8 FFF machines that all run on Duet2’s. I just finished building a custom 3/5 Axis CNC mill that is Mach4 based and I am considering moving it over to Duet for its simplicity and to eliminate the need for the external motion controller, pendant, external drivers, power supply’s etc. I have a Duet3 main board I keep as a backup that I would like to use.

Is there a CNC focused version of DWC, or any other GUI’s that can be used? I have a Microsoft surface setup on the mill and it would be great to have a CNC focused version of DWC vs. only a manual G-code input option.

closest you get to a cnc focused version is the workbee version, but afaik its not been updated to play with RRF3 yet.

@bearer That might be worth trying. Do you have a link to the workbee version?

Thanks. I’ll check it out. Are there so few people using these boards for anything other than 3D additive applications that a CNC focused version isn’t worth the development cost/time?

Duet is such a great controller design and DWC is so intuitive compared to anything outside of the crazy cost of commercial machines/software. It’s far superior to GRBL, Smoothie, BOB and even Mach in my opinion.

For small business that can’t take on the investment of a small scale commercial CNC , Duet would be the best option for anyone building a machine themselves or converting an old school mill to NC. I’m just surprised there isn’t more interest for it.

Work on CNC features is progressing all the time. Just keep in mind that it's a system designed for 3d printing getting CNC features added rather than a ground up CNC specific thing, so it'll take some time to get there.

We have an experimental CNC version of DWC already. The longer term plan is to make it a configuration option in standard DWC, but that won't happen before version 3.3.

@dc42 That's great news! I appreciate all the work you and your team put into the Duet! I have 8 FFF machines that I use to fabricate parts for my company. Last year I bought a Duet2 Wifi for my printer at home just to try it out and see what it was all about. The next day I ordered 8 of them and switched all the machines in my shop over to the Duet2Wifi. I'm pretty sure I've tried just about every MC option available. The Duets are hands down the best and most reliable. My machines run 16 hours a day, six days a week. Its been over a year now and I have never had a single issue with any of the Duet boards.

                          Hi all,

I have been working on the CNC dashboard. Please feel free to leave some feedback on ideas and enhancements. Also, if you are a CNC user I have a couple plugins that I have written that may add some nice/wanted functionality

                          https://github.com/Sindarius/DWC_GamepadJogger_Plugin
Adds the ability to use a gamepad to jog your spindle

                          and

                          https://github.com/Sindarius/DWC_GCodeViewer_Plugin
Will let you get a visual of your gcode, I recommend sticking to wire mode for CNC gcode. Just recently finished adding G2&3 support.

I got my mill up and running on my Duet3 with the Workbee version of DWC.

What is the best post processing option from Fusion360 to use with Duet?

@Shanian79 i would use the workbee post processor.
                                  haven't seen any others about.
Theres a modified version about as well that allows the spindle to be controlled through gcode

@R4ffers No not really. 10x simpler than setting up a printer. Just setting up the config and wiring up the steppers is all it really took. I set it up with sensor-less homing, which I haven’t done before. That took me a little over an hour to get figured out dialed in. Overall it’s really simple for a 3 axis.

The workbee DWC is very simple and straight forward.

@Shanian79 excellent well done. I've just finished building a CNC router using ooznest ox plates. I'm currently using grbl on a protoneer pi hat but have finally made the plunge and bought the duet 3 m6hc. I have made a test bed and installed endstops and steppers with a dual y axis, got things to finally start and stop last night. Been a big learning curve.
