Downgrading the bootloader over CAN doesn't work, I believe because bootloader versions prior to 2.0 don't have the right CRC. So the firmware refuses to erase the old bootloader and install the new one.

@dc42 hmmm, I had whatever bootloader came with the original 3HC and have never updated it prior to this.
          Maybe thats the issue?

I just flashed the very first bootloader release on to the EXP3HC using the ICE, booted up, and verified that the bootloader version was "not available" in M122 B1. Then upgraded successfully to 2.1 over CAN.

So I don't know why your bootloader upgrade failed.

              ok, thanks
might be back with questions later if I can't get the flashing to work

@dc42 would you entertain the idea of me sending you my 3HC for reprogramming? I'm in the UK and would recover the return postage etc

I received my board back today from @dc42
I am still having issues with it.
So far, I have determined that when powered from 24v (tested with 2 different power supplies), the diag LED does not flash. All 4 LEDs are illuminated to indicate VIN, 12v, 5v and 3.3v.
When powered from 12v, the diag LED does flash and all 4 LEDs illuminate.
Any pointers on where I can go from here?

Measure the 5V and 3.3V rail, or even better put a scope on them?
No idea why they'd behave different with different input voltages unless the buck converter is somehow fubar.

If supplying external 5V is an option then that might bypass the problem, but presumably its a relatively new board?

@bearer no, i'd had it about a year since they were released.
                          I don't have a scope.
I can try measuring the 3.3v and 5v rail but why would they work on 12v but not on 24v?

a year already .. time flies!

no idea why it'd be different, but given buck converters will have different efficiencies and operate with different input currents at different input voltages for the same load an unstable output was the only grasping-at-straws suggestion I could come up with seeing as it works with 12v.

(presuming there isn't a grounding issue with the 24v supply and not with the 12v supply)

Not that I'm aware of. I've tried 3 different 24v power supplies.

I'll see if I can check some voltages later

in lacking a scope, try measuring the AC (DC ripple on the 5V) as well as the DC RMS to evaluate potential instability if the DC reading looks OK.

Send it back to me if you like. I tested it at 18V because that happened to be what my PSU was set to.
