Error: Failed to communicate with PanelDue
-
hi there,
after not using my paneldue for a while during my printer rebuild it stopped working when i first plugged it in again. I updated the firmware of my 6hc motherboard to version 3.3.0. when i plug the wires is to the mainboard (the pin-out is correct I checked) the screen doesn't turn on. and if i try to update the firmware of the paneldue to version PanelDueFirmware-v2-7.0-logo.bin using this command M997 S4 P"PanelDueFirmware-v2-7.0-logo.bin" I get the following error Error: Failed to communicate with PanelDue bootloader (no START signal received). Please try again or press the Erase and Reset switches on PanelDue.
i checked the incoming voltage from the mainboard which is 5 volts as it should be.
what could be wrong here ? it is a paneldue v2.01 btw. -
In order to update the paneldue from the Duet directly you need to meet a few requirements. In this case I think your paneldue firmware is too old. You'll need to update it manually first to the latest. Going forward it may be possible to update from DWC if you meet the rest of the requirements:
Requirements
Only works for V3/5i/7i PanelDue running firmware versions 3.2.2 or later
Filename must be renamed to PanelDueFirmware.bin (future versions of DWC will rename uploaded PanelDue firmware files automatically), and reside in 0:/firmware (RRF 3.3 and later) or 0:/sys (RRF 3.2)
Flashing requires a baud rate of 115200. RRF will automatically change to this baud rate (and back at the end) if it is a different value but the wiring must provide stable communication at that speed
Automatic erase and reset is only supported from PanelDueFirmware 3.2.2 (earlier versions require manual erase and reset)Also, Duet Firmware 3.4 is out now, so don't stop at 3.3.

@phaedrux thanks for the info ill give it a shot

@phaedrux Sorry for my late response. i'm very busy getting my printer printing usable parts first. but last week i decided to look at fixing the screen. i tried updating the firmware which worked just fine, the screen is getting touch input. when i touch the screen in specific spots it will beep as if i pushed a button. i even accidentally homed the printer this way. anyhow, the problem doesn't seem to be software related. my guess is that the inverter for the back light is broken since the back light doesn't seem to illuminate. the question now would be if a broken back light converter is diagnose able and replaceable.

@stefvandermeer you should be able to tell by looking at the display from the side whether the backlight is working. You could also use a multimeter to see if there is any output from the backlight inverter. The part number for the inverter chip is at https://docs.duet3d.com/en/User_manual/Troubleshooting/Parts#paneldue-tft-panel-backlight-inverter-ic.
