Is this inconsistency intended on the old 0.8.5 board (screenshot of Duet0.85.brd)?

Woops, that's an error in the old board design. Is it in the Gerbers as well?

Have a go with fitting it all into 3 layers. TBH I never considered a 3 layer board as that's pretty non standard. You need a good ground plane though.

May I ask what your plans are?

        Haven't checked.

Just thought for a moment about rolling with my own board, because paying more than a 2 hundred $ just sounded too steep for me so I was looking at if I could save some cost. Adding it all up (including time I'd have to spend to learn how to redesign the board to 3(or even more extreme 2)-layers without errors) I realized it's not worth it.

        EDIT: Clarified my sentence

          Fair enough

I would be pretty surprised if anyone managed to make it fit on 2 layers. Also that would remove the ground plane which would be a bad idea.

Would most likely mean just quite a "few" 0ohm resistors and a larger sized board (which isn't bad in terms of heat dissipation though).
