      After trying high current one of the stepper now makes a vibrating noise at low speed but seems to work as before, can a stepper motor fail after overheating?

        @paboman yes, it can loose some of his magnetic.

          yes of course. High current --> high temperature --> the insulation of the wires the coils are made from can melt so that the coils are shorted --> no/less torque
