Z Stop -vs- Z Probe
-
I'm new at this when I say new I mean "like yesterday new". I have a question that might seem really dumb, but here goes. I have a Mini Differential IR Height Sensor and I'm wondering why does it have to be connected to the Z Probe pins on the Duet 2 wifi and not the Z Stop?
-
Because it's a probe?
Actually I think you can connect it to and endstop if you just wanted to use it as a simple endstop switch. But when it's working as an analogue probe to measure the distance to the bed I think there's something special about the probe sense pin that the endstop pin lacks.

Mainly because RepRapFirmware treats a Z-probe (which is a device that can probe the bed at different XY positions) differently from a Z endstop (which is insensitive to the XY position of the print head). It's possible to have both.

Here's a recent thread discussing using the IR Probe as an endstop: https://forum.duet3d.com/topic/10634/ir-probe-question

I would like to say "thanks" to both of you's (dc42 and Phaedrux) for sharing your vast wealth of knowledge on this subject. It's members like you two that makes this hobby possible for the rest us(newbies). Thanks again for your help.

@phaedrux Thanks it's answered a lot of my questions and then some.
