Solved Maestro not connecting to DWC or via USB

Long story short, had a maestro board sitting for a while as i lost interest for a bit,, but started again today.
connected via pronterface, got the ip address, connected DWC, started looking at the endstop config. changing settings trying to get the endstops to work, burning smell, disconnects from DWC.
unplugged USB immediately, looked for physical damage, cant see anything, so I plug in again. All the correct lights come on USB/DIA/3.3V/5V/network connection light. But no connection.
I have disconnected everything from the board, and the only connection currently attached is the USB to my laptop, which is not showing any form of connection.
Have I fried this? Everything looks OK, cant see any physical damage, just no communications!
I have looked at the guide for "What to do if you duet wont respond" and based on those steps my next move is to erase the firmware. Is there anything else I can try before I do that?

U10 is the Ethernet interface chip. If it is getting very hot, that indicates it is damaged. My guess is that U3 has failed and subjected it to excess voltage. If your board was still under warranty on 29 July when you reported the problem, please ask your supplier to replace it under warranty.

Check the small square chip labelled U3 not far from the power input block. Does it show any signs of damage?
