Lots of open source robots on hackaday.io, thingiverse and other sites use arduino and motor drivers or a MKS board with marlin for controls. Most of the robotic arms I have seen use them and I am wondering if they are missing out on Duet...

That is, would a Duet be more suitable for these types of projects or less so?

I am noob and have zero experience with either. I am in the process of deciding what to use as I am building a SCARA... but have plans to build an nDOF arm next year.

      What would you recommend?

I have been building and running a SCARA arm off of Duet 2, so it's certainly possible. There is more detail for setting up SCARA arms on the wiki.
