multistepping - how it works?

I see it is planned for 3.02.
How does this work?
I tried sometimes in the past to switch in the middle of the move from microstepping to full step and that was catastrophic, introduced all kinds of inaccuracies and artifacts. It was on Alegro drivers and probably not done properly. Is this multistepping something similar, real time change of microstepping during the move (like gecko does) or something else? How does it work exactly
