is there a place here to go for beginners on first connection of the Duet2 and a mac to a railcore with ethernet
-
@camassey there are instructions for connecting Mac and Duet 2 Ethernet here: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Guide/1.)+Getting+Connected+to+your+Duet/7
Also, moved to general forum.

thanks for the response.Have been trying that for a week now and nothing. Am i wasting my time trying to do it with a mac? I am completely illiterate when it comes to the computer side of this the mechanical and wiring was a blast.
So much detail is left out of the procedures it assumes you know all this stuff and every body that does it knows the basics.......thats knot me even this forum stuff is new. -
where exactly do you get stuck?
-
Well....first you build the printer and all the wiring is done then you go to hooking the board to the computer and its not wire?? i know there's no power hooked up.
is the ethernet cable connected?
Can it be done on a MAC. Theres so much gray are in all this stuff
Sorry for rambling but its frustrating -
Well you can vent if it makes you feel better, but to help you we'd need some specifics.
You have a Duet 2.. we assume ethernet?
You have a mac.The board comes with the firmware already flashed and a working SD card, so you may be able to connect it directly to your network and turn it on. If you have access to your router, you can check it to see what IP address the Duet has been given by DHCP. Then you can connect to that IP address in your browser and away you go.
If that doesn't work, or you don't have access to the router, you will need to connect to the printer via USB terminal and ask it what IP address it has by sending M552.
Or if you have a PanelDue you can send M552 there and don't need USB.
To connect via USB, see step 2 and 3 here: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Guide/1.)+Getting+Connected+to+your+Duet/7
When you try to do that, where do you get stuck? I'm not a psychic magician, so you'll have to be descriptive.

Yes ethernet
connect to network that's ethernet cable connected to router and the board?
when you say turn it on?
i do have access to the router don't understand what you told me to doi would never vent sir while being helped
-
Yes, connect the Duet to your network with an ethernet cable.
You can turn it on by either connecting it to your printer power supply, or if you don't have it all in place yet you can power it via USB. But if you connect both VIN and USB at the same time be sure your computer is on the same circuit as the printer to prevent a USB ground loop, which may damage the duet. https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/USB_ground_loops
If you have access to the router web interface, you can log into it and see if the duet has been given an IP address. If that makes no sense to you whatsoever, then we will need to ask the duet what IP address it has either with a PanelDue or by USB terminal.
And then we're back at steps 2 and 3.

just to clarify the board only has ethernet ,USB to mac, and cable to Duex 5 connected.I think i got into my router web interface did not see anything referring to duet. The only thing is see any where with duet in it is in my network preference Whats the dialup all about
-
That may be your USB terminal connection.
What happens if you try step 3 with the Duet connected via USB?
Mac OSX Users: Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal .
Run ls /dev/tty.* Copy the result that has USB in the name. For example; /dev/tty.usbmodem1411
Run screen /dev/tty.usbmodem1411 115200. Replace "usbmodem1411" with the result you received. You should see a blank screen. Hit enter and you should see OK returned. You are connected successfully. -
Thats the exact part i have been working at all day.I get the first part of that ls /dev/tty.*and get a result but can't get my brain around the second part about run screen and replace
-
WOOHOOOOO....must have done something right.I got a network running address in the terminal thing
-
i put the m115 thing in and got more good news saying
-
Well when you send
ls /dev/tty.*
you get a result that will look like/dev/tty.usbmodem1411
Copy that bit.Then send
screen /dev/tty.usbmodem1411 115200
except where it says.usbmodem1411
you would paste the bit you just copied from the last result. -
There ya go, looks like you are connected.
Now if you send M552 you should get an ip address back. Put that IP address in the address bar of your browser to connect to the web interface.
At that point you should probably update your firmware.
Download this zip file. Don't extract it.
https://github.com/Duet3D/RepRapFirmware/releases/download/2.05.1/Duet2Firmware-2.05.1.zip
In the web interface, go to the system tab and there will be a button on the right side that says upload system files. upload that zip file as is, and it will update everything and then reboot.
Once that's out of the way you'll need a config file set from here: Choose your board and firmware 2.03-2.05 and enter your printer specifics as best you can.
https://configtool.reprapfirmware.org/Start
At the end you'll get the option to download your config files as a zip file. Upload that zip file like you did with the firmware zip file to the same place in the web interface and then you can get to commissioning and testing that everything works.
At that point you might find this guide helpful: https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Guide/Ender+3+Pro+and+Duet+Maestro+Guide+Part+3:+Commissioning/39

i did get an ip address i just cut it off the top off the screen
it says network running ip address =192.168..... -
few more thing before i leave you alone for the day and do all my home work on the firmware
web interface????
and can this be powered down usb disconnected for the evening and it will be there tomorrow -
if you put M552 S1 in your config.g file it should work the same tomorrow, if not you'll have to enter M552 S1 to enable networking (or put it into the config.g file).
the web interface will be there as long as the networking is enabled, either by sending M552 S1 or including it in config.g
-
Also, since your IP address is being issued to you by your router under a timed lease, you may not get the same IP address again if you wait a while between connecting.
This is where logging into your router web interface and setting a DHCP reservation for the Duet IP address comes in.
Alternatively you can set a static IP address on the duet using M552 P192.168.whatever however you should choose an IP address that is outside of the range of addresses that the router uses to lease out, otherwise you may someday get a collision where the router assigns the IP address you've decided to use for the Duet to something else as well.
Having a bit of familiarity with your router is important. Usually the manual for the router can get you sorted out.

if network and client computer support mdns you could access it as http://duet.local/ independent of the IP.
( if you changed
M550
in config.g to something other than duet, then use that name instead
https://duet3d.dozuki.com/Wiki/Gcode#Section_M550_Set_Name )
