DWC anywhere?

Is there a way to allow my duet2wifi be connected wherever I am I.e on my 4g?

Yes, but you must be careful about exposing your printer to the internet at large. The DWC is just a website hosted on your network. Traditional port forwarding and dynamic dns can be used, but that's a risky option since anyone could find it and mess with your printer. The only safe option is to use a VPN tunnel to have your external device connect to your internal network as if it were local and then reach DWC as normal. If all of that sounds too confusing, I would suggest that remote DWC access is not for you at the moment.

Well in this case a VPN would be an endpoint running on your router rather than a VPN anonymization service you may be thinking of.

Also when you say they could mess with my printer. What do you mean? like turn it off or mess with the settings?

Well it will depend on your router. Some have the ability to act as a VPN endpoint, some do not. When using it, you would need to configure the VPN on your external device, like your phone, to connect to the VPN endpoint, like your router, and then for all intents and purposes, your phone will behave as if it was connected to your home network. It would have an internal IP address and could connect to other IPs within the network.
And yes, messing with your printer meaning that someone could have access to the DWC and do anything you could do with the DWC. Change configuration, turn on heaters, etc. The likelihood of that happening is unknown, but any time you have a port open it's going to eventually get scanned by a bot and then poked by a malicious human.

So I’ve been having a further think about this. A bit of blue sky thinking
, I’m not against the whole VPN thing but would rather do it for free which is why I’ve been thinking about it more. Is there not a way you could apply a password to the printers IP? therefore hacking would be heavily reduced no? -

You should not rely on it.
I really urge you not to connect your printer to the open internet!
The type of VPN being discussed is not a pay monthly to encrypt your outgoing traffic. rather it is designed to allow for an encrypted connection into your network. As has already been mentioned some routers have configurations for this already (although do some research to satisfy your self that the router actually does a good job and is considered secure.
