Question about UtilMaker design

  • Hi,

I've got three sets of DuetWiFi/DuetX5 boards and was thinking of building a new printer - just for fun.

I was wondering about the pros and cons of the original UtilMaker XY motion design.

    Any feedback would be welcome.

    Thanks.

On the pro side, it's a very rigid and light design and with an arm for the extruder the bowden tube can be pretty short.

On the con side it's comparatively difficult to assemble.

Do you happen to a picture or a link that would show the "extruder arm" you mentioned?

I think @veti had a good example of an extruder arm. Basically an upside down L that holds the extruder above and close to the center of the bed.

I think there was also an example ulticlone build in the my duet controlled printer forum with an extruder on a gimble.

  • Well I could only find two kits.

The first was the original UtilMaker with the wooden frame but it was around a $1000.

The second was a newer Chinese design using the kinds of parts I'm used to (aluminum extrusions, printed plastic pieces, etc). With shipping it was around $500.

I went with the more familiar and cheaper kit.

    We shall see.

    Thanks.
