New - P3 Steel XL Upgrade Path
-
Hello,
Am new to the 3D printing universe. Am a bit of a maker, good with micro-controllers and basic electronics, student of and getting better with 3D modelling, Fusion 360. Just finished building an MK2S, haven't loaded my first filament yet, but all else is finished and calibrated, first print in the next day or three.
My "old" machine is a modified P3 Steel XL with a Titan extruder, an E3D hotend, USB connection, no lcd, a Win 10 laptop running Simp3D to a Ramps 1.4 board w/ an Arduino Mega and a very old Marlin release. Printed a bunch of different materials, PETG for the most part now (building solar powered stuff which live outside) on a glass plate, glue stick, and with pretty good results. Titan is a bit moody but have learned to live with it by doing a lot of cold pulls and adjusting settings during the first layer. Have a fully stocked lab with all the toys and a wide variety of components.
Once the MK2S takes over my prototyping prints, I want to take down the P3 and replace the Ramps with a DuetWiFi for varied reasons and move on to multiple extruders.
Have been reading the forums and excited to get started but worried about the "beta" feel to everything and honestly, how to wire it all up and get the software config'd and running.
Any pointers on how to approach this would be greatly appreciated..
Best regards

G.,Don't worry about the beta thing, the firmware is just awesome .
The wiki contains all the information you need, and once you understand how to configure RepRapFirwmare, you'll love itβ¦
Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are some experencied users in these forums that are kind enough to helpI run a P3 steel XL myself, so I can share my config if you would need it

Sink, welcome to the Duet!
I can assure you that there is nothing beta about the Duet series of electronics. However, although the firmware is already packed with features, users keep asking for more. That's why most of the time there is both an official firmware release (currently version 1.18.2) and a beta release (currently 1.19 beta 11) for testing new features. Users who want one of the new features, or want to be at the bleeding edge and help with testing, install the beta. Everyone else should use the stable release.
