So I'm using a DC IR probe for homing and bed compensation but I was wondering if I can use the Z endstop for the max on the Z. I'm sure someone has done this, any help will be helpful. I just need to know what i need to add to the firmware to adjust for this.

Yes you can home using a microswitch and just use the probe for bed compensation. See https://www.duet3d.com/wiki/Configuring_RepRapFirmware_for_a_Cartesian_printer#Homing_Z.
