I'm converting a delta to use a toolboard 1LC and smart effector. I note in https://docs.duet3d.com/User_manual/Connecting_hardware/Z_probe_connecting the statement "You can connect a Smart Effector to a Duet 3 Expansion board as a digital probe, but programming it via an expansion board is not supported." That seems to be the case (though I haven't tried 3.5 firmware yet).

However, this restriction does not seem to be listed at https://docs.duet3d.com/User_manual/RepRapFirmware/CAN_limitations. Is this a permanent, semi-permanent or temporary restriction?

In the event of needing to adjust sensitivity I expect I can run a temporary wiring from the main board to the effector, so it's not a big issue - just curiosity probably.

@achrn you are correct, programming a Smart Effector via a tool board is not currently supported. I have added this to the Limitations page. Thanks for pointing out that it was missing.

I’m curious about your setup. I’ve been trying to get rid of the big cable bundle going to the effector. I’d love an effector that supported can without having to lash on a tool board, doesn’t seem that it’s gonna happen though.

Me too, but I decided to bite the bullet and do my own smart effector - toolboard combination. I am intending a 'My Duet controlled machine' post soon (but I have to take youngest daughter back to university this weekend). If the weather's as bad as it's forecast to be on Monday maybe then...

In summary, I've got a laser-cut aluminium plate to push the rods out to 80mm spacing and that gives me space to put on an Orbiter 2 extruder and a toolboard. I did do a bit of smart effector surgery (removed some connectors and soldered wires direct), but that might not be necessary with some slight changes. I lose about 15mm of Z, but nothing in X & Y. I've improved my cooling. Very happy with it so far.
