I would like to use two Usteppers on my nema 17, to do a closed loop positioning, as i occasionally loose steps during prints.
ustepper has a built in driver.. and just needs step and direction/enable from duetwifi, I assume i will need to use expansion board to make this work.

is there any built in functionality in Firmware for Encoder and closed loop position feedback? if i just wanted to add encoders?

If the UStepper has differential step, direction and enable inputs (+ and - inputs for each) then the external stepper interface board is the best option.

There is currently no support in RepRapFirmware for position encoders.

Hmmm... On one hand, I'd like to see the entire CNC/3D/Motion-Control industry go closed loop, on just about everything, just about all the time. Even at the hobbiest level. If this happened widely, the encoders would get cheap, etc, etc.

On the other hand, any printer that it close enough to loosing steps that it actually looses steps during operation has a serious, serious, problem.

Hmmm... makes me curious as to what you are seeing, and on what printer.

Uhhh... the ustepper has a built in encoder and is closed loop between the motor and drive, it also has digital outputs you could use to stop the build and re-home.

              Understood.

But again, if anywhere near loosing steps...

I do see the "It hit something" case. Those should be rare enough to catch with a webcam.
