Great news!
If the regulator IC is not getting hot then it's not affecting the external 5V - it is no different to using a separate 5V source by choice, eg. so the main 24V system can be switched on & off by the duet / M codes.
I do that with my Kossel, so it can shut the main supply of when finished a print.
