The maximum current supported by the Duet is 2.4A peak per phase, so you will be running it at about 69% of rated current. It should perform reasonably well at that current. I run the motors on my delta print lower than that. Don't forget that you need good cooling of the Duet to run it at or near maximum motor current.

Commanding movement to the drivers won't work unless you can specify both speed and acceleration, because the movement of the axes and the extruder all need to be synchronised. This generally means that one of the drivers will be moving at full acceleration but the other won't be.

I guess you could use the built-in homing function by changing the homing file to temporarily map the axis being homed to a non-existent driver, using M42 to send the homing signal, then commanding the homing move. If you connect the "homed" signal from the driver to the endstop input, then the Duet will know when the axis is homed.

I just realised: you said you want to use external drivers, but you also said you have a DueX5. That means you will face the same issue on the expansion header: the 5 EN/CS pins on the expansion header are used as CS pins for the TMC2660 drivers on the DueX5.

If you need to use a DueX board to support additional heaters or fans, and you also want to use 3 external drivers, you should use a DueX2 board instead.

You can also connect 2 external drivers to the CONN_SD connector.

Bear in mind that the built-in TMC2660 drivers support higher currents than other 3D printer control boards, so they can drive some types of Nema23 motor directly.
